法国一个偏僻的小镇，据传有一个特别灵验的水泉，常会出现神迹，可以医治各种疾病。有一天，一个拄着拐杖，少了一条腿的退伍军人，一跛一跛的走过镇上的马路，旁边的镇民带着同情的回吻说：“可怜的家伙，难道他要向上帝祈求再有一条腿吗？”这一句话被退伍的军人听到了，他转过身对他们说：“我不是要向上帝祈求有一条新的腿，而是要祈求他帮助我，叫我没有一条腿后，也知道如何过日子。”

关于感恩的历史典故
一、投桃报李 ：
出自《诗经》：投我以木桃，报之以琼瑶。从“木桃”到“琼瑶”，只是一枚感谢的种子而已——缘于爱与被爱。这之间连接的不过是一份心意罢了。或许，木桃对他而言，已是上上之品，你报之以琼瑶，也未必就是倾其所有——譬如就是一声由衷的“感谢”吧。
二、滴水之恩，涌泉相报 ：
原文是“涓滴之恩，当以涌泉相报”。书面记载最早为清代的《增广贤文?朱子家训》，原为民间俗语，后清代朱用纯编辑收录，为教子醒世用。
三、慈母之恩 ：
唐代诗人孟郊曾写下《游子吟》一诗：慈母手中线，游子身上衣。临行密密缝，意恐迟迟归。谁言寸草心，报得三春晖。
四、羊有跪乳之恩，鸦有反哺之义 ：
出自明朝《增广贤文》一书，意思是：小羊跪着吃奶，小乌鸦能反过来喂养老乌鸦，以报答父母的养育之恩。
五、衔环结草，以报恩德 ：
结草与衔环都是古代报恩的传说，出自《左传》。前者讲一个士大夫将其父的爱妾另行嫁人，不使殉葬，爱妾已死去的父亲为替女儿报恩，将地上野草缠成乱结，绊倒恩人的敌手;后者讲有个儿童挽救了一只受困黄雀的性命，黄雀衔来白环四枚，声言此环可保恩人世代子子洁白，身居高位。后将二典故合成一句，比喻受人恩惠，定当厚报，生死不渝。明朝时冯梦龙在《醒世恒言》中写道：大恩未报，刻刻于怀。衔环结草，生死不负。
六、漂母的一饭之恩 ：
韩信少年时家中贫寒，父母双亡。他虽然用功读书、拼命习武，却仍然无以为生，迫不得已，他只好到别人家吃“白食”，为此常遭别人冷眼。韩信咽不下这口气，就来到淮水边垂钓，用鱼换饭吃，经常饥一顿饱一顿。淮水边上有个为人家漂洗纱絮的老妇人，人称“漂母”，见韩信可怜，就把自己的饭菜分给他吃。天天如此，从未间断。韩信深受感动。韩信被封为淮阴侯后始终没忘漂母的一饭之恩，派人四处寻找，最后以千金相赠。
七、知遇之恩 ：
春秋时期，俞伯牙擅长弹奏琴弦，钟子期擅长听音辨意。有次，伯牙来到泰山(今武汉市汉阳龟山)北面游览时，突遇暴雨滞留岩下，寂寞之余，拿出古琴弹了起来。也正在附近躲雨的樵夫钟子期听到后，忍不住叫道：“好曲!真是好曲!”随后伯牙每奏一支琴曲，子期都能听出它的意旨和情趣，这使得伯牙惊喜异常。二人因此结为知音，并约好来年再相会论琴。可第二年伯牙来会子期时，得知子期不久前已经因病去世。伯牙痛惜伤感，摔破了古琴，从此不再抚弦弹奏，以谢平生难得的知音。
八、士为知己者死 ：
这是春秋末期晋国著名刺客豫让说的，强调感恩报恩。因为对自己有知遇之恩者智伯被赵襄子所杀，豫让认为“士为知己者死，女为悦己者容”，决心刺杀赵襄子为智伯报仇。第一次攻击失败以后，他用漆疮烂身体，吞炭弄哑声音，残身苦形，使妻子不识，然后寻找接近赵襄子的时机。第二次行刺仍以失败告终,但是被捕的豫让说：“明主不掩人之美，忠臣有死名之义。”他请求赵襄子借衣服让他砍一刀。赵襄子脱下了贵族的华服，豫让拔剑三跃而击之，然后伏剑自杀。
